I felt this watercolor painting deserved the First Place award because it is quite interesting for the sunglasses theme and the graphic way it was designed. The use of the red, yellow, and blue behind the woman’s faces created paintings within a painting. I also enjoyed the whimsy created by the sunglass theme and the floral embellishment. A fun and whimsical painting!

This beautiful, peaceful water scene with boats really captures the feeling of the day. The technical ability to create such glowing washes of color in the sky and water is remarkable. The reflections of the boats in the water and the more saturated color of the boats is perfectly thought out and executed. Simply, a beautiful painting!

A floral scene can be quite cliche but this one knocked it out of the park with a nice balance of lights and darks, beautiful spontaneous strokes of color and an interesting pathway of light that flows throughout. The color choices were well chosen and created a dynamic floral painting.

I was intrigued by this painting right away. The detail is amazing, and the limited palette of color enhanced the drawing ability of the artist. The white negative space really supports the design quality of the little gem!

This painting might be small, but it is powerful! Three elements describe this painting, figure, water, and foam. The play between the warm skin tones and the cool color of the water really works well. I enjoy the horizontal water and foam in juxtaposition to the vertical figure. If her arms were not outstretched, this would not be as strong of a composition. Well Done!

I feel this painting is all about color and shape. I’m evaluating it with an abstract perspective and find this painting builds not only on the shape of the objects but the positioning of the colors. The surface quality is also quite sophisticated. Another gem!

This nocturnal scene caught my eye. Although the artist used a limited palette, a nice balance of value was struck, and the texture created by the use of salt creates a starry effect. Not much of a fan of bats…. but the placement draws you into the composition. Nicely done!

I’m not usually attracted to political or topical themes, this collage/painting drew me in. The composition is quite effective and the colors dramatic which was a perfect choice for the theme of Herd mentality. I especially like the image of a fence that went on top of the horse images and to say, “We are all fenced in”.

In this green cold story that this painting is telling, that separating net attracts the viewer with the warmer temperature luminosity.
Lee Ackert Memorial Award for use of color

Sometimes “Use of Color” means splashes of bright colors but in this case, I felt this painting was deserving because of the sophisticated color that was achieved. A variety of delicate greens and a light – dark play of browns in the tree trunk are spot on. I also enjoyed the variety of brush strokes in the foliage and the calm quality of the water. Super Painting. Another little gem!

This collage piece spoke to me right away. The depth of perspective is quite evident and the way the paper was torn and placed draws you into the composition. I enjoyed the paper choices for their simplicity and their textures. Well Done!
