Awards

Home on the Beach by Kim J Belange

Best in Show

Lee Ackert Memorial Award

Judge’s Comments

The strength on this piece are the sharp lines of the architecture in contrast with atmospheric perspective and metaphysical light on house.

1st Place

Judge’s Comments

Well played cool versus warm color shift in addition with saturation to desaturation, and value range makes those flowers an ephemeral almost abstract still life

Red Sails by Dana Enders

2nd Place

Judge’s Comments

Cropping, composition well done with fast brush strokes. Nice painting. The use of chromatics darks instead of black plays well with the impressionist nature of the painting.

Cloud by Michele Barron Buelow

3rd Place

Judge’s Comments

I just want to eat that cloud.” It is really well done. Despite the small size, paintings have the potential of incapsulating a universe. Masterfully done.

Dappled by Tamara Culp

Merit Award

Judge’s Comments

What I like is how it has the man made structure, cold, metal contrasted with the nature. It sticks out. It works well how the curve of the tree with the bridge. Foreign but harmonious at the same time.

Merit Award

The horse in the background is hidden in the value of the composition but the red makes it a distinct character just enough. The soft edged legs of the red horse convey movement in a static symmetric composition.

One of the Boys by JoAnn LaPadula

Merit Award

Judge’s Comments

The artist’s style is playing well with realistic foreground versus distilled background. I like the finish versus the more essential. Chromatic then more muted.

Waiting by Floyd Lawrence

Honorable Mention

Judge’s Comments

A difficult subject to draw let alone paint, nicely rendered.

Babe by Kathleen C Taylor

Honorable Mention

Judge’s Comments

It feels like a vintage postcard, like bleached out by the sun. It speaks of the subject very well. In this desaturated context the muted orange appears chromatic.

Honorable Mention

In this green cold story that this painting is telling, that separating net attracts the viewer with the warmer temperature luminosity.

The Red Bridge by Dorothy McDowell

Maya Bryant Award for Plein Air

Judge’s Comments

If you look at the sky it could be a sunrise; the bridge conveys the idea of the sunset. The bridge sets the mood for this beautiful little oil study.
